UPLB MASS' 22nd MATHEMATCH

Held last September 7, 2009 was the 22nd Southern Tagalog Invitational Mathematical Challenge (MATHEMATCH).

Fifty one schools from all over region IV joined the said contest. This year, the organization has also included MIMAROPA in the coverage area of the participating schools. Students with their respective coaches came to battle with other schools: majority of which have already joined in the previous years of MATHEMATCH. However, since there was a newly-included area from region IV, there were also a number of schools who are new to the contest.

The 22nd MATHEMATCH is a whole day activity. The registration started in the morning at the CAS Annex 2. The elimination took place at the Multi-Purpose Hall 1 of the said building. At around 9 in the morning, exams, which cover Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra, Calculus and Statistics, were given individually to the participating students. Two hours were given for the elimination round. After the elimination round, the scores of the three representatives from each school are then accumulated to be able to identify who will be going to the final round.

The final round was held at the DL Umali Hall at around 1 in the afternoon. A total of 25 schools stepped up to the last round of the elimination: 10 of which were certain to adhere to the final round and 15 who were bound to secure their spots in the finals through the Wild Card round.

The Wild Card round is an added twist in the contest this year. Instead of getting 10 top scorers from the elimination, 25 schools were considered; 15 of which battled again to be able to have the chance to join the finals. Top five participating schools from the 15 will be regarded as finalists.

The guest speaker at the finals was Dr. Bernarda Elec, who shared her experiences and also her thoughts about this year’s theme, Mathematics in Music: An Inquiry of How Mathematics Makes Melody.

The judges in the Wild Card and Final rounds were Professors Rolando G. Panopio, Vernel M. Lawas, Ariel L. Babierra, Crisanto A. Dorado, and Ma. Cristeta N. Cuaresma.

The winning schools this year were St. Bridget College on the third place, Colegio San Agustin- Biñan on the second and De La Salle- Lipa as the champion.

Simultaneous with the 22nd Southern Tagalog Invitational Mathematical Challenge, a teacher seminar was also held at the SEARCA Dormitory which included a career orientation and a talk on topics related to this year’s theme.

The 22nd MATHEMATCH and the teacher seminar were two major activities of the UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society in celebration of the 21st Mathematical Sciences Week.
